Easy Ambrosia Salad in a green bowl with cherries on top.

This simple and delicious old fashioned fruit salad recipe will be the talk of the family gatherings. Easy Ambrosia Salad can be made in minutes and is a sweet and enjoyable kid friendly recipe everyone will ask for seconds.

Ambrosia Salad in a green bowl.

Do you remember this Easy Ambrosia Salad from your childhood? It is a classic salad with a classic taste. There are different versions here and there but this is the way we make it and I think you will find it delicious and perfect for Easter dinner or a family picnic!

The fruit is refreshing and the whipped cream and yogurt combine for the perfect balance of sweet and flavor. This salad has the same base as the Creamy Apple Salad. The ambrosia salad also has mini marshmallows and coconut if you prefer. (More on that later!) If you prefer a Jello base, try Strawberry Fluff Salad.

    Ingredients

    • vanilla yogurt - Greek yogurt can be used
    • whipped cream - Cool Whip
    • pineapple chunks - in 100% on juice
    • maraschino cherries - remove stems
    • mandarin oranges
    • mini marshmallows
    • coconut - shredded
ambrosia salad ingredients, yogurt, Cool Whip, canned fruit, marshmallows.

    Substitutions

If desired, you can not use yogurt and use ½ cup of sour cream instead. I prefer the yogurt as it is a bit better for you, but I know some prefer the sour cream taste. Also, the coconut is a classic ingredient but my family does not care for coconut so I chose to leave it out. It is up to you as well.

    Drain the juice

A very important step in making this Ambrosia Salad is to drain the fruit completely before adding it to the Cool Whip and yogurt mixture. The extra juice of the fruit will make the salad soggy and runny. So, after the can is opened, strain the fruit from the juices. Then the fruit can be added to the salad mixture.

    Refrigerate

This fruit salad can be served immediately after making it, though I recommend letting it sit in the refrigerator at least an hour. The ingredients need a chance to say hi to each other and start to get along.

    FAQ

Can I add more ingredients to this, like extra fruit?

Yes, you can. Remember that you may need to add more Cool Whip or Yogurt to cover the fruit completely.

Do I have to add the marshmallows?

No, you can leave out the marshmallows if desired!

Do you have other fruit salad recipes?

Yes we do! Poppy seed fruit salad and Frozen Fruit Salad are great too!

    How should I store leftovers?

Place the leftovers in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 48 hours.
