Delicious chocolate chips and M&M's combine to make these delightful cookie bars!

Chocolate chips and M&M's are quite the combination. They go hand in hand like marshmallow and chocolate or cream cheese and graham crackers.

That is why you can be pretty confident these M&M Cookie Bars will be a favorite of your family. It's a no-miss combination of gooey chocolate and the candy shell of M&M's. The cookie part is pretty great too.

    Ingredients

    • margarine (or butter)
    • egg
    • sugar
    • brown sugar
    • flour
    • baking soda
    • salt
    • chocolate chips
    • M&M's

I personally use Imperial margarine for this cookie bar recipe and I believe it to work the best. Others may have varying opinions about butter verses margarine and you can certainly use butter.

The imperial margarine is what I use and it is tried and true with this recipe.

    Putting foil on the pan

Putting foil on the pan is not necessary but it does allow you to remove the bars and cut them easier.

That is especially helpful when you are serving guests or are taking them to a bake sale and you want the pieces to be cut evenly and neatly.

The foil does not need to be greased in any way. It will peel back nicely from the M&M Cookie Bars.

How to make M&M cookie bars

The sugars, butter and egg need to be blended together first. For the best results, all the ingredients shouldn't be mixed together at the same time. Cream the butter, sugars and egg together.

Next, add the flour, baking soda and salt.

Stir the flour mixture together with the butter mixture until well blended. Now, it is time for the yummy part.

Spread the cookie dough out evenly and carefully using a wooden or plastic spoon.

    Bake

Bake in a 375 degree oven for 30-40 minutes or until cookie is set and a golden brown.

    Wait! What about the M&M's?

Yes, these are M&M cookie bars. We need M&M's! When the bars have baked for at least 20 minutes, pull the bars out of the oven and carefully (the pan is hot) set the M&M's on top of the bars.

I add the M&M's last so the colors won't bleed while baking and it will give a nice crisp look to the bars.

Place the cookie bars back into the oven to bake for the remainder of the time left.

    FAQ

Can I just mix the M&M's into the batter so I won't have to add them while the bars are baking?

Yes, you certainly can. I just like the look of the bars better this way. They will still taste great.

Can I use other types of M&M's?

Sure! Peanut butter M&M's would taste great or a different color of M&M's for the changing seasons/holidays.

    After baking

After the bars are done baking, remove them from the oven and let cool completely on the counter. Then carefully remove the foil from the pan. It should come out easily for you to cut the cookie bars.
