    Ingredients

    • butter - use real butter for this, not margarine
    • powdered sugar
    • milk - can use almond milk
    • vanilla
    • cocoa
    cocoa, butter and powdered sugar.

    Frosting tips

    • This frosting is not for piping, only spreading. If you try to make flowers out of this chocolate frosting, it will not turn out well. (But it spreads great!)
    • Make sure to let the butter soften slightly. If you let it soften too much, it won't be as firm as you need for the frosting. If you don't let it soften enough, the butter won't mix well. About 20 minutes on the counter at room temperature works well.
    • Vanilla is not needed but appreciated. The vanilla compliments the chocolate quite nicely.

    Using a mixer

A mixer is needed when making frosting. Whether it is a handheld mixer or a stand mixer, it helps whip together the ingredients well. The butter especially when being blended into the powdered sugar can be a task. The mixer makes short work of it.

    FAQ

How do I store the frosting?

You can store the leftover frosting in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Can I use margarine instead of butter?

No, this is a time when only butter will work. The margarine won't hold up as well. However, you can use dairy free butter if needed.

    Can I pipe this frosting?

No, this is not piping frosting.

    Equipment

    • 1 stand mixer

    Ingredients

    • ½ cup butter
    • 3 cups powdered sugar
    • ⅓ cup baking cocoa powder
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla
    • 2 tablespoons milk

    Instructions

    • Set the butter out to soften 20 minutes on the counter.
    • Whip the butter in a stand mixer or using a handheld mixer on medium speed.
    • Add the vanilla and mix.
    • Mix in the cocoa and powdered sugar. Mix on low speed then increase speed to medium. Start on low so the powdered sugar doesn't fling out on you!
    • Add the milk and mix on medium speed. Add more milk, 1 tablespoon at a time until desired consistency.
    • The frosting is ready to spread on cakes or cupcakes.

    Notes

The leftovers can be stored in a covered container in the fridge.
