    Red white and blue M&M's

Sometimes the red, white and blue M&M's are hard to find. To make this candy recipe even when the patriotic M&M's are nowhere to be found, use regular M&M's and, you guessed it, separate the colors. You won't have the white candy, but you will still have the red and blue. The white will be represented in the sprinkles and almond bark.

    Crush the Oreos

The recipe doesn't need a lot of Oreos, but they do need to be crushed into pieces. The size of the pieces depends on you. Smaller cookies are easier to break apart, but it does look nice to have a few larger cookie pieces, if you are going for presentation. The cookies can be placed in a zipped plastic bag and crushed with a utensil.

    Making the bark

The candy bark is melted in the microwave then spread on parchment or waxed paper. You will find it easier to transfer the candy when it is also on a cookie sheet. If you intend to allow the candy to harden on the counter, the pan is not necessary.

Once the almond bark has been spread out, then the fun part can begin! Sprinkle the Oreo crumbs, M&M's and sprinkles on top, in any pattern you want. The bark will harden and the pieces can be broken apart for easy eating!

    Tip

Make sure the Oreo pieces are pressed lightly unto the almond bark. That will ensure when the candy hardens and you break the pieces apart, the cookies are secured in the bark.

    FAQ

What else can I put in this bark?

You can drizzle a little red food coloring in the white almond bark for a swirling pattern. That would be fun.

Do I refrigerate red white and blue bark?

This candy can harden on the counter, if you want. If you are in a hurry, place it in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.

How thick do I spread out the bark?

It need to be about ⅛-1/4 inch thick. In other words, make sure you can't see the paper underneath when spreading out the bark.

    Storage

Store any remaining candy in the refrigerator in an airtight container or on the counter (in a container), out of direct sunlight.

Yes, this patriotic candy is a keeper! No candy thermometer needed and it is so fun to make for the family this Memorial day or 4th of July!

    Equipment

    • parchment paper or wax paper

    Ingredients

    • 6 squares almond bark
    • ¼ cup M&M's red, white and/or blue
    • 7 Oreo cookies crushed
    • ¼ cup red white and blue sprinkles

    Instructions

    • Place parchment paper (or wax paper) on a cookie sheet.
    • Place almond bark squares in a microwave safe bowl. Melt for 45 seconds, then stir. Melt in 30 second increments, stirring after each time until melted completely. Take care not to burn the bark.
    • Spread melted bark on the parchment paper, about ⅛-1/4 inch thick. You don't want to see the paper underneath the bark.
    • Sprinkle on the crushed Oreos, M&M's and sprinkles onto the bark. Push the Oreo pieces into the almond bark, lightly, just so they will stick.
    • Let bark harden on the counter, or in the refrigerator for up to 30 minutes. (Fridge will be quicker.)
    • After harden, break into pieces and serve.
