    Types of apples

Different apple varieties have different purposes in baking and making applesauce. Applesauce requires apples to break down well so it can be turned into sauce. When baking, a firmer apple is required. This chart, The Best Apples For Eating And Baking will be helpful when determining what apples to use.

This recipe uses Honeycrisp apples which is an apple that holds its shape well and is the perfect amount of sweetness. A Granny Smith would also be good, if you want to counter the cinnamon roll sweetness with a bit more tart apple. A Granny Smith also holds its shape well while baking.

    The filling

The apple filling is a lot like an apple pie filling. The apples are coated with flour, sugar and cinnamon. Those ingredients help the apples to form a nice base for the cinnamon rolls.

apples with cinnamon in a square pan.

The apples are placed in the bottom of a greased square or circle 8 to 9 inch pan. The cinnamon rolls are then placed on top.

cinnamon rolls uncooked in a pan.

It is as simple as that. The apples are place in the bottom of the pan and the cinnamon rolls are placed on top of that. Then bake!

    Bake

The easy apple cinnamon rolls will be baked at 375 degrees for 20 minutes or until the cinnamon rolls are slightly golden brown and are baked all the way through. The apple mixture will be a cinnamon/gooey soft mixture that will be scooped up with the cinnamon roll.

    Serve

To serve these breakfast rolls, the pan can be inverted so the apples are on top, much like a pineapple upside down cake. I didn't do that, instead, when I dished out a cinnamon roll, I turned the cinnamon roll upside down so the apples were on top.

    FAQ

When do I put the frosting on?

Drizzle ¾ of the frosting on top of the cinnamon rolls after baking. Then after the cinnamon rolls are put on a plate and the apples are on top, drizzle a little more frosting on top of the apples. It is a frosting sandwich!

Can I use any brand of cinnamon rolls?

    Yes! Any brand will work.

    Can I double this recipe?

Yes you can! Just add another can of cinnamon rolls and one more apple. Double all of the apple coating ingredients as well.
