    Ingredients

    • apples - about 8 was used but it will depend on the size of your crock pot
    • cinnamon
    • nutmeg
    • sugar or honey - we used honey to keep this dish natural and no added sugar

That is it. The ingredients are simple. This particular recipe is for about 5 cups of applesauce. You can certainly add more ingredients for a larger batch.

    Sugar or honey?

We have fresh honey from our bees so I like to incorporate it into our recipes whenever possible. That said, trying to keep this low on added sugar, honey is the best option. To make this applesauce sugar free by using honey you will only need a few teaspoons. A little honey goes a long way.

White sugar or brown sugar can be added to the applesauce. Either will work well. The brown sugar will make the applesauce a little thicker and almost a syrup like texture.

Best apples to use for homemade applesauce

I used Cortland apples to make this sauce. Certain apples do not cook down well, so you will want to avoid using those apples. Apples that cook down well are Gala, Macintosh, Cortland and Jonathon. Do you need a guide? This Best Apples To Use Guide will help you decide which apples to choose.

    How to make chunky applesauce

So, now the question arises, how does the applesauce actually get chunky? Do we need a special tool? The answer is NO you don't.

The crock pot will quickly make the apples soft and easy to blend. All you need is a spoon and start stirring. The apples, if cooked enough, will mash perfectly. Want the applesauce chunkier? Stir less. Want the applesauce smoother? Stir more.

    Process

Hand holding an apple being peeled.

First, you will want to carefully remove the peels from the apples if that is something you would prefer. However, the peels can be left on. When the apples cook in the crock pot, the peels will soften as well and we feel adds a great flavor.

Next, you will cut the apples into chunks. Don't get so hung up on the size, just make the apples so they aren't large. However, if you put in larger pieces, just cook the applesauce longer. Small apple chunks will take less time to soften.

Cinnamon and apples in a crock pot ready to be cooked.

Place the apples in the crock pot with the cinnamon, nutmeg and honey. Turn the crock pot on high (for 2 ½ hours) or low for 4 hours.

Stir the cinnamon applesauce until the apples break down and turn into applesauce texture. Then you are ready to serve!

    Storage

If you have any homemade applesauce left, you can store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

This chunky homemade applesauce recipe is about as easy as it comes. It will make your house smell delicious and it is kid friendly!
