Applesauce puffs are perfect for breakfast or brunch. This muffins start with a biscuit mix for easy preparation. In fact, these soft and flavorful muffins are a lot like a cinnamon sugar donut. They won't last long at your house!

Applesauce Puffs are muffins rolled in butter and cinnamon sugar. Enough said, right? They are like eating a cinnamon sugar donut. (However they are much easier to make!)
You also add applesauce to the mix instead of having to add a lot of oil so that is a healthier.
Of course, you may loose some of that benefit when you roll the muffin in butter and cinnamon sugar. Shh, don't tell. But who is counting?
When I made these, I knew the family would love them. We like muffins in our house like these Blueberry Cheesecake Muffins and Chocolate Muffins.
Ingredients
- biscuit mix - this can be a Bisquick mix or a store brand
- cinnamon
- sugar
- applesauce - sweetened or unsweetened works
- milk
- egg
- oil
Biscuit mix
As I said, it starts with a biscuit mix. You can use a homemade mix or a store bought mix. I used a store bought mix because I happened to have some in my pantry. Here is a recipe for homemade biscuit mix.

What type of applesauce to use
These soft cinnamon sugar muffins have applesauce in them and that certainly helps with how soft they are! The muffins are moist and flavorful.
The applesauce can be unsweetened to help cut down on the amount of sugar in these muffins. Yes, they are coated with a cinnamon/sugar mixture but using unsweetened applesauce does help.
A cinnamon applesauce does help add a little extra flavor so that can be used as well. The cinnamon in the batter can be omitted if a cinnamon applesauce is used.

Bake
Bake these kid friendly muffins in a 375 degree oven for about 10-12 minutes. The muffins will start to turn a golden brown and will be firm to the touch when they are done.
Cinnamon and sugar mixture

After the muffins are down cooking, let them sit in the muffin tin for about 5 minutes. Then remove from pan (carefully) and dip the top of the muffins in the melted butter and then the cinnamon sugar mixture.
Storage
These muffins are best when served and eaten the same day or within 24-36 hours. If you want to make these muffins ahead of time, make the muffin, then wait to roll the muffin in the cinnamon sugar mixture until ready to serve.
Try making them. Actually, this would be a great recipe for your children to try their hand in the kitchen! These muffins were moist, flavorful and became a family favorite. You can use a regular sized muffin pan like this one or a mini muffin pan (which, by the way, this one holds 24 muffins. Brilliant!).

Was the mixture supposed to be almost dough like?? It just disnt seem like enough liquid it was the consistency of a batter at all. They came out very dense. Any idea of what I may have did wrong?

Hello! Glad you tried Applesauce Puffs. Sorry it didn't turn out so well for you. I reviewed the recipe (and I have made these multiple times myself) so the only thing I can think of is maybe you forgot an ingredient. The applesauce, milk, egg and oil should be enough to produce the proper batter. My suggestion would be to try it again.
Let me know how it turns out for you! If you have the same problem, we will troubleshoot and figure it out. :-)

What about the carbs in the muffins. I'm type 1 and I have to count my carb intake. Mini muffins would be great just wondering how long to bake the mini muffins

Would you happen to have the calorie count for these?
Kim says
I'm so glad you like them! I don't have the calorie count for them, however. I have been thinking about getting something on my site to display the calorie count on my recipes... I may just have to do that. Thanks for the push to look into it! :-)

Can I use any type of milk? We have a dairy allergy
Kim says
Yes, you can! I can't have cow's milk due to asthma so I use Almond Milk a lot. Works just fine! :-)
