How to make fluffy buttermilk pancakes could not be easier. It is simple ingredients, added to a bowl and stir.

    Then, cook!

Don't worry, I'll walk you through it. Your search for a great pancake recipe is over, because this is it.

    Ingredients

    • flour
    • egg
    • buttermilk
    • oil
    • salt
    • baking soda
    • baking powder
    • vanilla
    • sugar

You probably already have all these ingredients on hand, except for the buttermilk.

    What is buttermilk?

Buttermilk is milk with a little tang to it. When butter was churned by hand, the leftover product at the bottom was the butter milk. (Makes sense, right?) Now, the product in the stores, is milk with cultures in it that change the milk into buttermilk.

When using buttermilk in recipes, it gives the recipe a nice little tang.

    Pancake process

Mix the ingredients in a large bowl with a whisk.

When it is time to start making this buttermilk pancakes recipe, gather every thing needed for this breakfast recipe (or breakfast at supper!) because the process is quick.

First, mix together the dry ingredients in a large bowl with a whisk. That is just to get the baking powder and baking soda mixed in a little bit with the flour.

    Then, add the wet ingredients.

    Don't over mix pancake batter.

    Pancake mixing tips:

:: Don't over stir the pancake batter. If you do that, the pancakes will be a little tough. Not bad, but not the light and fluffy pancakes we are looking for.

:: Also, don't worry about some lumps of flour in the batter. You don't want chunks, but no need to fear a few lumps. If you fear the flour lumps, you will overmix and if you overmix the pancakes get tough.

    How to cook fluffy pancakes

The key to cooking pancakes is to read the bubbles. You want bubbles to start to form in the pancake, around the edges. When that happens, you know it is time to flip the pancakes.

It is important not to flip the pancakes to often. Really, you want to flip it once. If you flip it over and over, then they can get tough as well. (Picky pancakes, right?!?)

Watch for the bubbles in the pancakes to know when to flip them.

It only takes about 3-4 minutes each side, using ⅓ measuring cup as a guide. Again, watch for the bubbles and don't walk away while they are cooking.

Before you know it, you will have delicious pancakes ready to be served alongside bacon, sausage or eggs! (Or all the above!)

I don't have buttermilk, can I substitute something else?

I don't recommend subbing regular milk in place of buttermilk. But, to make a sour milk, take one cup of milk and add 1 teaspoon of lemon juice. Let it sit for about 5 minutes. It isn't quite the same, but it works very well.

Can I add chocolate chips, blueberries or bananas to this buttermilk pancake recipe?

Yes! Just fold in the add-ins after mixing the batter.

    Pin for later!
