It doesn't get much easier then this simple side dish, but blueberry applesauce is a family favorite. A simple two ingredient recipe but your family will be asking for it over and over again!

This blueberry applesauce is rather easy.  I'm almost embarrassed to even post about it.  I mean, it's applesauce with blueberries thrown it.

I gave away the recipe in the first sentence.

Then I thought maybe, just maybe, I wasn't the only one who had never done this before.  I know if that is the case, all of you would appreciate this recipe. Blueberry applesauce is a great twist on a classic side dish.

    Ingredients

    • Blueberries - fresh or frozen will work.
    • Applesauce - I use unsweetened applesauce.

Are you like we are?  I have the hardest time coming up with a different side dish to feed my family at mealtime. I can make a great main course. My dessert options are unlimited.

Bread?  No problem. (By the way, try this Oatmeal Bread.) But for me to whip up a great, unique side dish, not really going to happen.

One day, while pondering my typical side dish decisions (applesauce, green beans, corn, crock pot glazed carrots or cheesy potatoes), I thought about combining a few favorites.

We always have blueberries in the house and applesauce is a favorite around here. Why not combine the two?

    Mixing two favorites

Applesauce either store bought or homemade work for this recipe.

We would rather have homemade applesauce than store bought, but apples weren't really abundant last year so no homemade applesauce for us. However, store bought tastes fine.  Especially when we added the blueberries.

To make this simple side, put the applesauce in a pot and place it on the stove top. You can add frozen blueberries or fresh blueberries (washed, of course), either work.

Blueberries and applesauce make a great combination!

Then just cook the applesauce for about 15 minutes over medium/low heat, stirring occasionally. As the blueberries warm up, you can take your spoon and mash a few blueberries to release the juices and add flavor and color to the applesauce.

    Pin for later!

That is it! It is done! Serve with your favorite meal for supper or for lunch. Or make up a batch and have your children take it in their school lunches. Delicious!
