    Ingredients

    • stuffing mix - cornbread stuffing works well for this
    • egg
    • mushrooms - can be left out if desired
    • sausage - mild Italian is preferred
    • cheese - a Colby Jack or Cheddar is best
sausage, stove top, mushrooms, egg and cheese.

    A few tips

    1. The sausage can be any brand you like, but I recommend a more mild flavor so it blends well with the stuffing. However if you want to try a type of sausage with a little more kick, you can!
    2. The stuffing is a cornbread stuffing. However a chicken or turkey stuffing would be fine as well.
    3. White or Bella mushrooms can be used. The can absolutely be left out if preferred.
    4. The sausage needs to be cooked for this recipe. Be sure to plan a little extra time to cook the sausage before assembling this casserole. The sausage can be cooked the day before and placed in the refrigerator until ready to make the stuffing casserole.

    The stuffing

The box of stuffing mix will be made the same way as normal, typically with only the mix and water. The other ingredients will be stirred together with the stuffing once it is cooked.
