I wrote a series a while ago on Tips For Baking A Birthday Cake. I hope many of you were inspired to start making your own birthday cakes. After all, baking them at home saves so much money compared to buying one at a store. The other day, we had a birthday party for our daughter. She asked for cupcakes, which made me be delighted. Why? Making cupcakes is so much easier than making a cake and this is a busy month as it is! Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy to making the children’s birthday cakes, I was just in the mood for easier. I also only had time for easier. 😉 Wondering how to make birthday cupcakes? Don’t worry, I got ya covered.
Making cupcakes is not hard. I know so many people who are a little intimidated by the thought of making it themselves. Reason being:
They aren’t perfect.
I can’t decorate well.
How do you pipe frosting?
In reality, cupcakes are very forgiving. You can decorate them all differently (on accident or on purpose!). You can choose different icings for each one or have two (or more!) different flavors of cake. Sprinkles look great on cupcakes so any mistake is easily hidden. Getting what I’m sayin’ here? Cupcakes are the ultimate beginner baker’s dream!
Here are a few tips:
Always buy cupcake liners.
The beauty of making cupcakes over a cake is the ease of cupcake liners compared to trying to get the cake out of the pan without hurting the cake. (Follow that?) You don’t need cupcake liners, but get them. The cupcakes just slide out the pan. They also just look festive and fun.
Use Wilton frosting recipe.
It is just a great recipe with handy tips to make the frosting spreadable, pipeable and writing-able. There is only a few ingredients and it comes together easily. Here is the recipe to Wilton’s frosting. In addition to Wilton’s frosting recipe, also look into getting Wilton’s decorating tips.
How to decorate with Wilton decorating tips.
Well, you could certainly go the Wilton site again and learn how. Speaking from someone who just picked up a piping bag and started decorating, it isn’t that hard. It isn’t that easy, either. So why should you try? Practice makes perfect. Experiment. To decorate the cupcakes above, I used a star tip and just started swirling. It was fun to try different decorations. Remember, if it doesn’t quite work out the way you wanted it to…
Let your child decorate it with sprinkles.
So you have made the cupcakes, the frosting looks so-so and guests are coming over soon. The cupcakes don’t look like store cupcakes so now what? Hand your child the sprinkles and let them go to town with it. It is win-win for everyone involved. Your child thinks you are great because you let them decorate the cupcakes. Your guests think you are great and the cupcakes are great because your child decorated them. Best of all, no one can see the questionable frosting on the cupcakes because they are covered in a mountain of sprinkles. It works! And even better? Next time you will remember what works, what didn’t and how to improve.
Give it a try! Avoid store bought cupcakes and try your hand at homemade. I know you can do it. 🙂
