This post was sponsored by Kings Dominion, an amusement park near Richmond in Doswell, VA. I received complimentary tickets in exchange for my post. All opinions are honest and are based on my family’s experience.
My husband likes amusement parks. While I was planning our family vacation to Virginia, I noticed there were a couple of amusement parks in the area. Since our Virginia vacation wasn’t a typical beach vacation for us, I thought I would bring that fact up to my husband and see if he would want to go to an amusement park.
Of course, he said yes! Trying to decide which amusement park to choose was a little tough. However, when I dug into what Kings Dominion had to offer in terms of roller coasters, I knew which one we needed to go to. After all, hubby likes the roller coasters. (So does our oldest!) Kings Dominion has the Intimidator 305 which is the fastest and tallest roller coaster on the east coast. Perfect for the older ones in our family. For the younger ones, they also had Planet Snoopy complete with Snoopy rides and dancing characters.
The day we went, it wasn’t crowded at all. I heard schools weren’t out in the area so the crowds seemed to be thinner than what is typical. We got right into the park and had to decide what ride to go on first. On the way to the middle of the park, we spotted what was, to me, one of the best features of Kings Dominion.
It is a height checker. In other words, my younger kids could get a wristband that easily shows what rides they are tall enough (or small enough) to ride. It made getting onto rides quick and easy with no question. We seriously loved the ease of those wristbands.
Our first ride, the Eiffel Tower–Look at the view!
A Place For Moms
Another fabulous feature of the park was the Family Care Center, located in Planet Snoopy.
It had everything moms of young children would appreciate and need. It was air conditioned so you could escape the heat if you needed to. It was a place to feed your young children, a quiet (again, air conditioned, so important!) place for them to nap. It is a wonderful addition any mom would love!
Something I greatly appreciated at this park, was the ability to leave the park to eat lunch. You can have your hand stamped so you can re-enter. Now, I know a lot of parks do this, however most parks don’t have a nice picnic area right outside the gates of the park. Yes, it did. May I add that the tables were shaded as well. Most parks will not have a picnic area and you need to walk miles to find shade or eat in your car.
We ate in the grass under some trees. I really appreciated that. The food at Kings Dominion smelled delicious and the prices were about what you would expect at amusement parks. They did have a Chik-Fil-A there and of course the funnel cakes were hard to pass up. They have a refillable souvenir drink bottles for $10.99 with unlimited free refills for one day. That is a very fair drink deal and a great idea. Did we buy anything? Well, it’s hard to pass up the fudge. We justified it because it was buy two get the third for free. We probably would have bought it anyway! 😉 By the way, get the cotton candy fudge. So, so good!!
When you buy a ticket for Kings Dominion, you also can get into Soak City. Soak City is actually adjacent to Kings Dominion. When I heard there was a water park as well, I assumed you would have to walk a little bit to get to it. Nope, it was no farther than any area of the park. We were disappointed because Soak City wasn’t open during the week yet. (We went the first week of June.) By the end of that week, it was open daily. As a mom, Soak City would have been great because our 4 year old could have cooled off at the Soak City Splash House. Of course, the two parks for one price deal is wonderful! Soak City looks like it has so many great and fun rides for the whole family.
If you are heading to Virginia, I recommend checking out Kings Dominion. The two parks for the price of one deal is great, the staff was friendly and the park was clean. You can take your lunch if you want or there are plenty of options in the park for lunch. We had a fabulous time. Do you want to know if I rode any roller coasters with my hubby and Ryan? Well, I did not. I did however enjoy the Avalanche (even our 3 year old could ride that!), some Snoopy rides, Scrambler and some water rides like the Shenandoah Lumber Company. Family fun at Kings Dominion!
